How EA-Powered 14-Oak Planting Transforms Kennedy Middle School

On the morning of Thursday, September 17, 2026, Kennedy Middle School in Redwood City received a green boost.

Thanks to generous sponsorship and hands-on volunteer support from our longtime friends at Electronic Arts, EA, CityTrees contributed.

CityTrees planted 14 beautiful new oak trees to shade, protect, and beautify the campus. This effort supports the surrounding neighborhood streets and aligns with planting, redwood city, tree.

Over a dozen enthusiastic volunteers from EA’s Redwood City campus traded keyboards and screens for shovels, stakes, and mulch buckets.

Working in teams throughout the morning, they dug in to plant one 24-inch boxed tree beside thirteen 15-inch boxed trees. Additionally, this planting, redwood city, tree effort mobilized campus staff and students to care for the site after planting. The crews mapped the layout along key campus perimeters to guide future maintenance.

Planting for Canopy, Shade, and Climate Resilience

Oaks are ecological keystones in California, providing unmatched canopy coverage, carbon sequestration, and critical habitat for local birds and pollinators. For this planting, we selected a diverse mix of drought-hardy oak varieties tailored to enhance the school grounds:

  • 5 Cork Oaks (Quercus suber)
  • 4 Valley Oaks (Quercus lobata)
  • 2 Compton Oaks (Quercus × comptoniae)
  • 2 Graves Oaks (Quercus gravesii)

The new trees were strategically placed along several edges of the school grounds, including stretches along Maddux Drive beside the athletic fields, Connecticut Drive, Washington Avenue, and Goodwin Avenue.

As these young trees mature, they will provide vital shade for students walking to class, community members watching weekend ballgames, and neighbors enjoying a stroll through the area. This planting, redwood city, tree illustrates the community’s commitment to urban greening.

A Longstanding Community Partnership

This planting is just the latest chapter in EA’s ongoing dedication to urban forestry in our shared home of Redwood City. Over the years, EA has sponsored multiple community plantings, demonstrating an enduring commitment to local environmental stewardship and vibrant public spaces.

Many thanks to the EA volunteer crew for their boundless energy. They brought teamwork and hard work to Thursday’s event.
