Neighbors Saying “Yes”: A Personal Approach to Greening Carolina and Ohio Streets
On Saturday, January 31, the CityTrees board took a different approach to our neighborhood planting: we went door-to-door.
Instead of simply identifying open plots of dirt, our team spent the morning canvassing Carolina Avenue and Ohio Street, knocking on doors and chatting with residents about the benefits of a thriving canopy.

The “Consent to Care” Model
At CityTrees, we know that planting a tree is only half the battle—the real work happens in the years of watering and care that follow. That’s why we were so thrilled to find six homeowners who didn’t just want a tree; they committed to being its steward.
By the end of the day, we had successfully added six beautiful new specimens to the neighborhood, each with a dedicated family ready to watch it grow.

What’s New on the Block?
We focused on two species known for their adaptability and striking presence:
| Street | Species | Quantity | Notes |
| Carolina Ave | Trident Maple | 5 | A stunning, compact tree with tripartite leaves that turn vibrant orange and red in the fall. |
| Ohio St | Graves Oak | 1 | We went big here with a 24″ box specimen! This sturdy oak will provide incredible shade for the 5ft right-of-way. |
Overcoming the “Concrete Jungle”
Even with enthusiastic homeowners, urban planting has its physical hurdles. On Carolina Avenue, our volunteers navigated several spots with existing bricks or concrete in the right-of-way. Despite these obstacles, and thanks to the clear “yes” from the residents, we were able to find the perfect placement for every single tree.
A Greener Future, One Door at a Time
This planting serves as a reminder that the best way to grow a forest is to grow a community. When a resident agrees to water a tree, they aren’t just helping the environment—they are investing in the beauty and health of their own front yard for generations to come.
