Celebrating 4,000 Trees: CityTrees’ Milestone in Redwood City’s Red Morton Park
On a picturesque Saturday morning, amidst the chirping of birds and the gentle rustle of leaves, CityTrees reached a significant milestone in its mission to green urban spaces. On March 30th at 11 am, volunteers, past and present board members, and esteemed guests gathered at Red Morton Park in Redwood City to commemorate the ceremonial planting of the organization’s 4,000th tree.
The event, held against the stunning backdrop of the Magical Bridge playground, was not only a celebration of CityTrees’ achievements but also coincided with the annual Arbor Day tree planting event organized by the Department of Public Works. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as community members, including representatives from the Garden Club, Kiwanis Club, SHSD Key Club, and Sequoia Master Gardeners, came together to contribute their time and effort.
Nestled on the hillside behind the slide mound, affectionately known as “The Native Garden,” the ceremony added another layer of significance to this beloved community space. As preparations were underway, the Parks Department’s dedicated crew ensured that every detail was taken care of, from irrigation to stump grinding, to create the perfect setting for the tree planting.
CityTrees spared no expense in selecting the perfect specimen for this special occasion. A magnificent 24″ box Quercus canbyi, also known as the Canby oak or Sierra oak, was carefully chosen to grace the park with its presence. Additionally, a second tree of similar stature was acquired to further enhance the greenery of the surroundings.
The event was graced by the presence of esteemed City Council Members Diane Howard and Kaia Eakin, who shared inspiring words and underscored the importance of community involvement in environmental initiatives. A plaque, placed at the base of the newly planted tree, serves as a lasting reminder of this momentous occasion and CityTrees’ unwavering commitment to sustainable urban development.
As the ceremony concluded just before the impending storm, there was a sense of fulfillment and pride in the air. CityTrees’ 4,000th tree stands tall as a symbol of resilience, community spirit, and the enduring legacy of environmental stewardship. With each tree planted, we take another step towards a greener, healthier future for generations to come.
